VOCALISM
the art of being heard
VOCALISM was founded in 2015 by Dónal Kearney. It's a community platform that provides workshops in vocal technique, hosts cultural events and promotes discussion on social issues in Ireland and beyond.
"I learned the value of paying attention to your body when speaking"
- Joanne Malone, SUAS Educational Development
Our vision
Our vision is to live in a community where every individual is free to express themselves creatively. We believe in building platforms - both physical and virtual - from which we can share our ideas and listen to others.
Our mission
Our mission is to develop a network of community groups, charities, schools, artists, human rights defenders and social entrepreneurs. We want to encourage everyone to use their voice (physical, not metaphorical!) to discuss social and cultural issues in Ireland and beyond.

Our values
- Inclusive: We think cohesive societies are ones where everyone feels represented. Whether citizens or refugees, we believe in listening to every voice.
- Creative: We are all capable of innovative and creative collaboration. With adequate resources, everyone has the potential to create something beautiful.
- Expressive: We want everyone to become vocal members of their community and to tell the story they want to be heard.
"Overall, I found it really helpful [and] the tips I got from it will be of use to me next time I have to do some public speaking."
"I liked the reflection on how best to engage an audience."
"Interactive, good practical content and fun."
- Staff of Front Line Defenders
VOCALISM Workshops
The idea behind the workshop is that participants get an opportunity to use their voices in front of a group - developing presentation skills, confidence and capacity to command the room. This can be done by incorporating vocal techniques, singing exercises and performance skills. Understanding breath control can release the power of the voice - whether speaking, acting or singing.
These workshops use a technical and creative approach so that everyone involved can learn from each other about how to engage an audience. The workshops can be tailored for schoolchildren, teachers, civil society professionals, students, human rights defenders, community groups, and private businesses.
Please get in touch for more information about workshop content.

"I found VOCALISM to be an incredibly empowering experience. Dónal's emphasis on breath and remaining calm while speaking in front of others proved invaluable... We worked on public speaking factors which I had never really considered prior to the workshop, such as posture and stance. These are elements of speaking which are not just useful for official presentations, but also are very important in day-to-day interaction."
- Meaghan Carmody, Director/Producer of No Snowflake
VOCALISM Events
We plan to gather people together to share a community experience, to discuss local issues, to strengthen social bonds, but also just to have fun! We'll be hosting informal sessions involving singing, storytelling, and a platform for anyone with ideas they wish to share with the community. There will also be themed events: talks, film-screenings, interactive campaigns.

We travel to human rights conferences across Ireland to share our vision of living in a community where everyone can express themselves creatively. Dónal has presented at the NUIG International Summer School on the Arts & Human Rights 2015. Later this year, Dónal will present in Dublin Castle at the Front Line Defenders Dublin Platform for Human Rights Defenders at Risk and at the Belfast Human Rights Festival.

"VOCALISM helped me realise that relaxing and speaking slowly allowed me to articulate with confidence what I wanted to say in a clear and eloquent manner to any group of people."
- Eoghan Martin, Co-founder of Dev, Meet Tech
Our aim is to build a community by using our voices creatively. Throughout this process, Vocalism will document the songs, stories and ideas of the people involved - so that they can reach more and more people.
